LOCM was started in 1995 as a support group in a local church in Queens, New York. Twenty people attended the first meeting. Providing a safe place for Christians to share and be healed from past or current pain was essential. In 1995 there was a stigma attached to Christians seeking out professional help. Many times the believer was told, “pray harder, have a little more faith.” When the healing they were seeking didn’t come, many were faced with a ‘faith crisis.’ “Does God really love me? If He loves me why am I not being healed? Maybe God is punishing me?” Not only is such thinking wrong, it spirals the person downward into despair, hopelessness and depression. Others will attempt to “work” toward achieving God’s approval, in order to become whole. God loves us, and His Love is not based on what we do or don’t do. His love is unconditional. God is Love. (I John 4:16).
Today the stigma has lessened, but is still present. As Licensed Clinical Social Workers, God has given us the ability to reach out to both Christians and non-Christians alike. Truth is truth, and the success of any good therapist is that they are working with people the way God made them. It is truth that sets people free (John 8:32).
